What Are School, Sports & Employment Physicals?
A physical for school, sports or employment is a health screening that confirms a person is fit to take part in a specific activity or role. Schools, athletic associations and employers require them so that participants can safely do what they are signing up for. The exams share a common core, but each one focuses on what matters for its purpose.
School physicals look at a child's overall health and development and confirm immunizations are current. Sports physicals, also called pre-participation exams, focus on heart health, the musculoskeletal system and any condition that could raise injury risk during competition. Employment physicals confirm that a candidate can safely perform the specific tasks of the job, which matters most in physically demanding or safety sensitive roles.
These exams almost always come with a deadline attached. Same day and next day appointments are often available at Guardian Primary Care, so students make registration, athletes start the season on time, and job candidates finish their hiring paperwork without waiting. We complete the documentation carefully and accurately at the visit, which is the simplest way to avoid a form coming back rejected.

Our Approach to Physical Examinations
A Careful History
We review your medical history, current medications, past injuries and family health background. For sports physicals we pay particular attention to heart history and any previous concussions. For employment physicals we focus on the specific demands listed on your employer's form.
A Complete Examination
The exam covers all major body systems, with extra attention on whatever your situation calls for: orthopedic assessment for athletes, immunization status and development for students, and the capabilities your employer needs verified.
Forms Finished
We complete school health records, sports participation clearances and employer medical forms accurately and in full. Most documentation is finished during the visit, so you walk out with what you came for.
Benefits
Quick Availability
Same day and next day appointments are often available, which matters when school registration, the start of a season or a job start date is days away.
A Thorough Exam
We examine all body systems, with particular care around heart health for athletes, development and immunizations for students, and job specific requirements for employment.
Paperwork Handled
School health records, sports clearances and employer medical forms are completed at the visit, so you are not chasing signatures afterward.
Problems Sorted Quickly
If something turns up, we address it here when we can and arrange a specialist referral when we cannot, so clearance is delayed as little as possible.
What to Expect During Your Physical
Before Your Visit
Bring the forms from your school, league or employer. Gather your medical history, a list of current medications and your immunization records. For sports physicals, note any past injuries, especially concussions, with dates. Wear comfortable clothing that makes the exam easy.
During Your Visit
We review your health history and any concerns, then complete the exam: vital signs, vision and hearing screening, heart and lung assessment, abdominal exam and musculoskeletal evaluation. For athletes we perform specific orthopedic maneuvers to check joint stability and confirm old injuries have healed. For employment physicals we cover what the job requires.
Clearance and Forms
If you are cleared, we complete the documentation right away. If something needs attention, we explain it and lay out a plan, which might mean further evaluation, treating an acute problem, or a temporary activity modification. Most patients leave the same day with completed forms in hand.
Follow Up If Needed
When we find something that needs treatment or specialist evaluation, we arrange it and work to get you seen quickly so enrollment, the season or the job start is not held up. Many concerns we can handle in house, which means no outside referral and no waiting.
What Each Type of Physical Covers
School physicals: we confirm students meet Missouri school immunization requirements, including measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, hepatitis B and other age appropriate vaccines, and catch up anything that is missing. We screen for things that can quietly affect learning, such as vision and hearing problems, and give practical guidance on managing asthma, diabetes or allergies during the school day. We also cover developmental milestones and what to expect at each age.
Sports physicals: we complete the pre-participation form your school or league requires. The exam includes careful cardiovascular screening, including family history of sudden cardiac events, and a review of past injuries, particularly concussions, to assess whether healing is complete and return to play is safe. We check joint stability, flexibility and strength to identify injury risk, and give specific conditioning and prevention advice. For children enrolled in Guardian Direct Care, annual and sports physicals are included.
Employment physicals: these are completed against the requirements on your employer's form. For physically demanding roles we assess lifting capacity, range of motion and cardiovascular fitness. For healthcare workers we review immunity to communicable diseases and tuberculosis screening status. If your employer requires testing we do not perform in the office, we will tell you up front and point you to where it can be done, so nothing stalls halfway through.
Common Questions About School, Sports & Employment Physicals
What is the difference between a school physical and a sports physical?
Both look at overall health, but a sports physical puts more weight on cardiovascular screening and musculoskeletal assessment, because the question it answers is whether you can safely compete. A school physical looks more broadly at development, immunization status and conditions that can affect learning. Some schools accept a sports physical as meeting the school requirement and some do not, so check with your school. Many families have both done at the same visit.
How far ahead should I schedule?
Same day and next day appointments are often available, so last minute is usually workable. Even so, two to four weeks before your deadline is the safer window. That leaves room to address anything unexpected, get a specialist evaluation if one is needed, catch up on immunizations, or track down missing records. Sports physicals are generally valid for a year, and many schools require them to be dated within a specific window before the season, so check your school's policy.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring every form from your school, league or employer, since they often have specific sections that must be completed and signed. Bring your immunization records, or tell us where you received your vaccines so we can verify. Bring a list of your medications with doses. For sports physicals, note past injuries and especially concussions, with dates and treatment. Comfortable, loose clothing makes the exam easier, and if you wear glasses or contacts, bring your current prescription information.
What happens if you find a problem?
We tell you right away and make a plan. Some findings, like a slightly elevated blood pressure reading or a heart murmur, need a second look before clearance, and we can often do that evaluation here. If a specialist is needed, we make the referral and work to get you in quickly. Most findings do not end participation, they simply need managing or monitoring. If we cannot clear you the same day, we will document exactly what is outstanding and help you work through it as fast as is safe.
Are physicals covered by insurance?
Guardian Primary Care is in network with most major commercial insurances, Medicare and Medicaid, and many plans cover an annual school or sports physical as preventive care. Employment physicals are often the responsibility of the employer or the applicant rather than the health plan. Coverage varies, so call us at (573) 200-6143 with your card and we will check before your visit. For children enrolled in Guardian Direct Care, annual and sports physicals are included at $40 per month, and fair upfront self-pay pricing is available on request.
